Gold: The Precious Metal of Choice

Gold: The Precious Metal of Choice

Appearance Gold is a soft metal with a distinctive yellow hue. It is chemically inert, meaning it resists most reactions, although it will dissolve in aqua regia (a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids).

Uses The majority of mined gold is stored as bullion. However, gold's unique properties make it invaluable in various applications:

  • Jewellery: Gold is extensively used in jewellery, either in its pure form or as an alloy. The term ‘carat’ indicates the purity of gold in an alloy. Pure gold is 24-carat but is very soft. For increased durability, 18-carat and 9-carat gold alloys are commonly used.
  • Coinage and Monetary Systems: Historically, gold has been used in coinage and as a standard for monetary systems in several countries.
  • Art and Decoration: Gold can be beaten into very thin sheets known as gold leaf, used in art, decoration, and architectural ornamentation.
  • Electroplating: This process coats another metal with a thin layer of gold, ideal for watch gears, artificial limb joints, inexpensive jewelry, and electrical connectors due to gold's excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion.
  • Technology: Thin gold wires are utilized in computer chips to create circuits. Gold's conductive properties make it ideal for protecting electrical copper components.
  • Dentistry: Dentists use gold alloys in fillings, and gold compounds are sometimes used to treat arthritis.
  • Industrial Catalysts: Gold nanoparticles are increasingly used as catalysts in industrial processes. For instance, vinyl acetate, used to produce PVA (for glue, paint, and resin), is manufactured using a gold catalyst.

Natural Abundance Gold is one of the few elements found naturally in its pure form, occurring in veins and alluvial deposits. Annually, about 1500 tonnes of gold are mined, with approximately two-thirds sourced from South Africa and most of the remainder from Russia. While seawater contains about 4 grams of gold per 1,000,000 tonnes of water, the concentration is too low to make extraction viable.
