Aluminium: The Versatile Lightweight Metal

Appearance Aluminium is a silvery-white, lightweight metal that is soft and malleable.

Uses Aluminium's unique properties make it indispensable across a wide range of products and industries:

  • Everyday Products: Aluminium is used in cans, foils, kitchen utensils, window frames, beer kegs, and airplane parts. Its low density, non-toxicity, high thermal conductivity, excellent corrosion resistance, and ease of casting, machining, and forming make it highly versatile. Additionally, aluminium is non-magnetic and non-sparking.
  • Alloys: Pure aluminium is not particularly strong, so it is often used as an alloy with metals like copper, manganese, magnesium, and silicon. These lightweight but strong alloys are crucial in the construction of airplanes and other forms of transport.
  • Electrical Applications: Aluminium is a good electrical conductor and is commonly used in electrical transmission lines. It is cheaper than copper and, weight for weight, almost twice as good a conductor.
  • Reflective Coatings: When evaporated in a vacuum, aluminium forms a highly reflective coating for both light and heat. Unlike silver, this coating does not deteriorate. These reflective aluminium coatings are used in telescope mirrors, decorative paper, packaging, and toys.

Biological Role Aluminium has no known biological role and can be toxic to plants in its soluble +3 form. Acidic soils, which make up almost half of the world's arable land, increase the release of Al3+ from minerals, leading to lower crop yields. While our bodies absorb only a small amount of the aluminium present in food, it can accumulate over time. Foods high in aluminium include tea, processed cheese, lentils, and sponge cakes. Cooking with aluminium pans does not significantly increase dietary intake, except when preparing acidic foods like rhubarb. Some indigestion tablets are made of pure aluminium hydroxide. Although a link between aluminium and Alzheimer's disease has been suggested, it has not been proven.

Natural Abundance Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, comprising 8.1% of its composition, but it is rarely found uncombined. It is usually found in minerals such as bauxite and cryolite. Most commercially produced aluminium is extracted using the Hall–Héroult process, where aluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite and then electrolytically reduced to pure aluminium. This process is very energy-intensive, consuming 5% of the electricity generated in the USA. However, once produced, aluminium does not corrode easily and can be readily recycled.
